Abacus Technology Selects Somat Engineering, Inc. for the U.S. Department of Transportation's Volpe Transportation Information Project Support Contract (V-TRIPS) Washington, DC - September 23, 2010 - Somat Engineering, Inc. (Somat), an award winning technical services firm, serving both the public and private sector, announced today that it is a subcontractor for the Volpe Transportation Information Project Support (V-TRIPS) contract recently awarded to prime contractor Abacus Technology Corporation (Abacus). The multiple award contract has an estimated value of $234 million over the next five years. V-TRIPS was developed and awarded by the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) Volpe National Transportation Systems Center (Volpe) in Cambridge, MA. Volpe is part of the U.S. DOT's Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) and is an internationally recognized center of transportation and logistics expertise. The Center has eight Centers of Innovation which focus on cross-cutting transportation, research, education, innovation and other multimodal issues, and offer their services to both DOT and non-DOT organizations. V-TRIPS is a multiple award contract vehicle with an IT functional scope of work. The IT support services cover five primary areas: (1) System Analysis, Development, Operations and Maintenance, Deployment, and Field Support; (2) System Architectures and Framework; (3) Facility and Operations Support; (4) Information System Security; and (5) Technology Assessments and Modernization. The IT support services will be provided on a wide variety of national transportation system modes including aviation, surface, marine, pipeline and rail.
