The history of Somat Engineering, Inc. begins with its founder, Mr. Ramji Patel, a native of Gujarat, India, who traveled to the United States in 1970 to further his education in Civil Engineering.  He attended the Detroit Institute of Technology (now Lawrence Tech), and received his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering in 1971.  Upon graduation, Mr. Patel was employed by a prominent Michigan engineering and architectural firm.  He achieved his professional engineering license in 1977.  Mr. Patel was responsible for the design and construction of a variety of projects involving structural engineering, environmental science and surveying services for local and state governments and private companies.

After several successful years of practice with his employer, Mr. Patel met Dr. Vijaysinh Mahida, a professional engineer employed at a local firm.  With a mutual desire to own and operate a viable engineering business, the pair formed a partnership and opened the doors of Somat Engineering, Inc. in a small office suite on Jefferson Avenue in Detroit, Michigan, on January 2, 1986.  The young firm focused its interest in emerging infrastructure engineering technologies and environmental services.

The firm steadily grew during the 1980s and 1990s becoming a significant provider of infrastructure engineering services.  Somat’s primary clientele consists of local and state government agencies such as the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department, which provides potable water to nearly four million people in the City of Detroit, Michigan and 126 neighboring communities in southeast Michigan; the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) which services Michigan’s 119,570 miles of highway, road and street network and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) which has the 10th largest roadway system in the United States.

In 1995, Mr. Patel became the sole owner of the firm.  Mr. Richard Anderson, a prominent geotechnical engineer joined the firm in 1996, and served as President until 2000.  Mr. Anderson continues to serve as the firm's Principal Engineer.  In 2000, Mr. Gnanadesikan Ramanujam became the firm’s majority shareholder, President and CEO.  With this transition in management, Mr. Patel became Chairman of the firm.

Mr. Ramanujam earned his Masters degree in Civil Engineering from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee in 1989, and joined Somat shortly thereafter.  His ethic of hard work and diligence resulted in increased responsibility.  He took the initiative to learn all facets of the firm’s field work.  This included the operation of the company’s drilling rigs and other heavy equipment.  His experience, flexibility and diverse skillset made Mr. Ramanujam an invaluable asset to the company, resulting in his current position as President and CEO.

The firm preserves the integrity of its founders through accountability, quality in workmanship and dedication to its clients.  Under Mr. Ramanujam’s leadership, the firm continues to expand its services while building its client base.  With a heavy reflection on “Lessons Learned,” he guides Somat's corporate philosophy toward relationship building, integrity and value engineering, the key components of the firm’s viability and success.  The firm has been awarded numerous high-profile projects in the areas of civil, environmental, geotechnical and transportation engineering, and has now begun to experience similar success in information technology.  Somat currently operates offices in Detroit, Taylor and Grand Rapids, Michigan, Cleveland, Ohio, Washington, DC, and Bangalore, India.
